QI/PI: POSNA Safe Surgery Program (PSSP)— First-Year Results Implementing Quality Metrics

Background: Ranking of orthopaedic programs by external organizations is expanding to pediatric orthopaedics. These rarely consult orthopaedists themselves; therefore, POSNA members strongly supported the creation a new performance evaluation. As result, developed member-driven process for driving quality improvements in orthopaedics: Safe Surgery Program (PSSP). The PSSP aims develop key metrics that believe improve outcomes This paper summarize first year implementing metrics. Methods: Quality, Safety, and Value Initiative (QSVI) Council 20 five domains: sports medicine, trauma, spine, hip/lower extremity (LE), hand/upper (UE). were integrated into online surveys (one per domain) distributed member centers across North America. Results: Thirty-three responded at least one domain-specific survey. Spine had highest response rate (88%), while hand/UE hip/LE lowest (70% 73%, respectively). Centers meeting each metric ranged from 65% 92% 62% 100% 79% 83% 96% hip/LE, hand/UE. Large very large centers, as well specialized children's hospitals, provided more detailed protocols procedures, likely due greater resources specialization. There was nearly agreement between on with well-known, easy-to-follow checklists fulfilling metric. Conclusions: primary goal create internally developed, surgeon-driven determine high-quality care.
